Private Boat Tours to Poros

Poros Island – Timeless Charm & Seaside Beauty, Greece

SCROLL

Poros: The Emerald of the Saronic

Most people think of the Saronic as rocky islands and open water. Poros is different. The pine trees come down to the shoreline, the channel between the island and the Peloponnese is narrow enough to feel like a river, and the town is built in layers above the water like an amphitheater. Unlike the bleached-white austerity of the Cyclades or the rugged drama of Hydra, Poros is green - genuinely, unexpectedly green - and that changes the whole feel of the day.

The island sits just 58km south of Athens, which makes it one of the closest escapes in the Saronic Gulf. While the ferry takes nearly 2.5 hours to navigate the coast, a private cruise from Athens gets you into the Poros canal in 60 minutes. That's an hour on the water with the Athenian Riviera running alongside, the Peloponnesian mountains appearing on the horizon, and the city completely behind you before you've finished your first coffee on deck.

This Private Cruise to Poros is Perfect For

1
Couples
The channel between Poros and Galatas is one of the most striking nautical miles in Greece. Narrow, slow-moving, lined with neoclassical houses on one side and the Peloponnese coast on the other. Arriving by private boat, at your own pace, makes it significantly better than arriving on a ferry with two hundred other people
2
Swimmers
Love Bay and the rocky coves near the Russian Dockyard have deep, emerald water. The kind you dive into from the boat rather than wade into from a crowded beach. The visibility is good, the water is sheltered, and there's usually nobody else around
3
Architecture lovers
Poros Town is full of neoclassical houses built by 18th and 19th-century sea captains, a 1927 Clock Tower, and small squares that most visitors walk past without finding. Worth an hour on foot - more if you like getting lost in back streets
4
Short stays
60 minutes from Athens by private boat. If you want a full island day without spending half of it travelling, Poros is the answer. Close enough to do on short notice, far enough to feel like a proper escape

Beyond the Ferry

Experience Poros the Way It Was Meant to Be Seen

The ferry docks at the main port and you're stuck there. The best parts of Poros, the Russian Dockyard, the coves along the southern coast, the approach through the canal, are either inaccessible by land or completely different when seen from the water.

By private boat from Athens, the coastline is yours. Anchor at the Russian Dockyard before the day-trippers arrive. Swim to Daskalio islet in the middle of the channel. Cruise slowly through the canal to Galatas with the town passing a few metres from the boat. None of that is possible on the ferry - and all of it is the point of going to Poros.

There are no fixed stops and no schedule to chase. If you want to stay longer at Love Bay, you stay. If you want to skip the port entirely and spend the afternoon at anchor in a quiet cove on the southern coast, you go. The skipper knows the water. The rest is up to you

What to See & Things to Do in Poros

1
The Clock Tower
The symbol of the island and worth the walk up from the port. Built in 1927, it sits high enough above the town that from the top you can see the entire naval base, the lemon forest across the water on the mainland side, and the channel you came through on the way in. The walk takes about fifteen minutes from the waterfront. Almost nobody else makes it up there during the middle of the day.
2
The Russian Dockyard
Stone ruins of a 19th-century naval base sitting directly on a sheltered beach surrounded by pine forest. The water here is protected from the wind - still, clear, and good for snorkeling over the old stones on the seabed. One of the better anchor spots on the island and significantly quieter than anything accessible by road. We arrive by boat, which means no dusty track, no other people, and the ruins as a backdrop for a swim that most visitors to Poros never find.
3
Love Bay -Limanaki tis Agapis
Pine trees that hang directly over the water and give it a distinctive green tint. On land it gets crowded in summer - beach bars, sunbeds, the usual. On the Axopar you anchor in the middle of the bay, away from the shore, and get the scenery without the noise. The swimming is deep and clear and the name, for once, is not an exaggeration.
4
The Lemon Forest - Lemonodasos
Two minutes by boat from the island, on the mainland side near Galatas. One of the largest lemon groves in Greece, thousands of trees on a hillside that slopes down to the water. In May and June the scent carries across the channel before you arrive. Worth the short detour, particularly if you're there in early summer.
5
Daskalio Islet
A small, heart-shaped island in the middle of the channel with a white chapel on top. Close enough to swim to from the boat. The beach is tiny, barely a beach at all, but the chapel, the shape of the island, and the position in the middle of the channel make it one of those spots that stays with you. We can get you close enough to swim ashore if the conditions allow.
6
Poros Town
The town climbs the hillside in layers above the waterfront, neoclassical houses, narrow alleys, small squares tucked behind the main street. The Clock Tower sits at the top. The waterfront itself has the usual mix of cafes and tavernas, but the backstreets are quieter and worth an hour of walking without a destination in mind. Pick up an amygdaloto - the local almond sweet, before you leave. It's the thing Poros is known for locally and genuinely worth trying.

A Full Day Private Cruise from Athens to Poros

How the Day Runs

10:00 - Departure from Athens Your skipper is at the Amavyssos when you arrive. Quick hello, brief rundown, and the Axopar clears the harbour. Within minutes the city is behind you and the Saronic opens up ahead. The crossing to Poros takes 60 minutes - the air cools down, the coastline of Attica runs alongside, and the Peloponnesian mountains start to frame the horizon. It's a good crossing. By the time Poros appears, you're already well into the day.

11:00 - Russian Dockyard First anchor drop at the Russian Dockyard on the southern coast. Stone ruins of the 19th-century naval base sit right at the water's edge, surrounded by thick pine forest. No road access worth mentioning, which means almost no one else around. Dive off the platform, snorkel over the old stones in clear water, or sit on deck and take in the ruins. Quiet, sheltered, and one of the most atmospheric spots in the Saronic Gulf.

13:00 - The Poros Canal We slow to no-wake speed and enter the narrow channel between Poros and Galatas. Neoclassical houses, traditional fishing boats, and waterfront cafes pass by a few metres from the boat. It takes about twenty minutes to cruise through at this pace - long enough to understand why people come back to Poros specifically for this stretch of water. We dock at the main pier and you step straight into the town.

14:00 -Lunch on the Waterfront A few steps from the boat and you're at the taverna. We'll point you toward the right one before you arrive - not the first place you see from the ferry dock, but the ones that have been there long enough to care about the food. Marinated octopus, fresh fish, lemon-infused local dishes, cold wine. Take your time. The boat isn't going anywhere until you are.

Before heading back, a short walk through the narrow alleys up to the 1927 Clock Tower. The view from the top is worth the fifteen-minute climb - you can see the full geography of the day from up there. Pick up an amygdaloto on the way back down and reboard at the pier.

16:00 Love Bay & Daskalio After lunch we head to Love Bay - pine trees, green water, good swimming away from the shore. Then a short cruise to Daskalio, the small heart-shaped islet in the middle of the channel. Close enough to swim to the tiny beach if the conditions allow. One of those spots that most day-trippers on the ferry never reach.

18:00 Return to Athens The crossing back takes 60 minutes. The light at this hour is different from the morning - the Saronic settles, the Athenian Riviera starts to light up in the distance, and the day finds its natural end. By the time you're back at the marina you've covered the dockyard, the canal, Love Bay, the lemon forest, and the town. A full day that ran entirely at your pace.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "The highlight for us was definitely the canal at Poros on the way back. Our skipper slowed down so much that it felt like we could reach out and touch the houses on the shore. We hit the Russian Dockyard first thing in the morning and it was dead quiet — just us for nearly two hours. We're definitely coming back next summer." -Anna & Christoph, Germany / 15/06/2025

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "We didn't really know what to expect from Poros, we just wanted something close to Athens for a day trip. It ended up being the best part of our holiday. Love Bay is stunning, and since we were on the boat, we didn't have to deal with the crowds on the shore. Also, the skipper told us exactly where to buy the best local almond sweets (amygdaloto) before we left. Such a great day." - Rebecca T., Australia / 20/07/2025

⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Really good experience. Cruising through the canal was something else, never seen anything like it. The skipper’s lunch spot was spot on too – really fresh fish. Giving 4 stars only because we spent a bit less time at the Dockyard than I wanted since we got a late start from Athens. My advice: leave as early as possible to make the most of it." - Nikos P., Greece / 10/08/2025

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "After going to Hydra a few times, we were told to give Poros a go. It’s a totally different vibe – much greener and way more laid back. We did a detour to the lemon forest which was a highlight, the smell is amazing even from the boat. Our skipper was a great guy and knew all the best spots to anchor. Will be telling all our friends about this." - James & Sophie, United Kingdom - 12/09/2025

Can we combine Poros with Hydra in one day?

Yes - we run a combined Hydra & Poros itinerary that covers both islands in a single trip. Poros sits on the route to Hydra, so the timing works naturally. If you want to split your time between the two, get in touch and we'll build the day around your priorities.

Is the Poros channel safe for a private boat - it looks very narrow on the map?

The channel is narrow but well-navigated and deep enough for the Axopar. Our skippers have made this crossing dozens of times. The slow passage through the canal is actually one of the highlights of the day -you're close enough to the waterfront cafes to hear the conversations as you go past

We have young children - is Poros suitable?

Yes. The crossing from Athens is smooth on the Axopar, the Russian Dockyard has still, protected water, and Love Bay is sheltered enough for children to swim comfortably. Mention the ages when you book and we'll plan the stops accordingly.

How different is Poros from Hydra or Aegina?

Very different from both. Hydra has no vehicles, a more austere character, and a well-known port. Aegina has ancient sites and pistachios. Poros is greener and more relaxed, the canal experience is unique and there's nothing quite like cruising through it on a private boat at slow speed with the town on one side and the Peloponnese on the other. If you've already done Hydra, Poros is the natural next trip.
